Find Your Inner Balance
Compassionate therapy for individuals and couples inspired by the art of bonsai trees.
Intentional Living
At Bonsai Counseling & Psychotherapy, we nurture your mental well-being with gentle counseling inspired by the art of bonsai.
The bonsai metaphor is about intentional growth, not limitation.
Just like a bonsai tree:
- Growth is guided, not forced
- Care is consistent and patient
- Small, thoughtful changes create long-term balance
There are 5 core principles to the bonsai approach:
1- Intentional Growth
We focus on helping you grow in ways that fit your values, life stage, and circumstances rather than chasing “perfection.”
2- Pruning What No Longer Serves You
This means identifying unhelpful thought patterns, habits, and behaviors that may have been helpful in the past but no longer serve you. The goal is not to erase the past, but to reshape how it affects your present.
3- Root Strength Before Rapid Change
A bonsai’s success depends on a strong root system as this is how it obtains nourishment. Similarly, we work on strengthening your own “roots” by focusing on emotional regulation, self-awareness, safety, and trust. Strong “roots” make real change sustainable.
4- Environment Matters
Just like a bonsai can’t thrive in the wrong soil, we also consider how external factors contribute to your overall well-being. This means looking at relationships, work or school stress, and cultural and systemic influences among other things.
5- Small, Consistent Practice
Not every session will lead to a major breakthrough – and that’s okay. Progress comes from regular reflection and tiny shifts in your mindset and behaviors.
Our Services
Individual Therapy
Couple’s Therapy
In couple’s therapy, we strive to better understand the dynamics that perpetuate your conflict so we can break unhelpful patterns and create a strong foundation on which to rebuild your relationship. This entails increasing your insight and learning to take accountability and responsibility for the role you play in the relationship. We focus on building empathy for our partner and learning to recognize destructive patterns and individual behaviors that are preventing you from having the strong relationship you want. We also identify strategies for fostering emotional connection and building more positivity in the relationship.
We teach effective communication skills and use tools from the Gottman Method, attachment theory, emotionally focused therapy (EFT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).
